“Tristan Cain?”

Tristan stopped pacing as soon as he heard his name. A young nurse was walking toward him. James and his close friend Ryan, who was a paramedic at his firehouse, sat behind where he now stood. He couldn’t breathe. He grabbed his chest to see if his heart was still beating, because damn if he didn’t think it had actually stopped due to the expression the nurse wore.

The waiting area he was currently occupying, which was filled to the brim at the moment with activity due to the accident, had gone eerily quiet.

“Is one of you Tristan Cain?” she asked when she reached him.

“I am.” His voice shook as he spoke.

“You brought a woman in earlier?”

He felt sick.

James and Ryan stepped up on either side of him. It was James who answered for him, since he could no longer speak. “Yes. Can you tell us how she is?”

The young nurse looked as if she were about to cry. She must not have done this before, but Tristan knew that look well and already anticipated what she was about to say.

“I’m very sorry to have to tell you this, but her sister just told me she didn’t make it.”

Tristan was suddenly unsure how he was still standing. He felt lightheaded and dizzy, but he needed to know what happened. “How?”

“There were some complications during surgery, her sister said.”

Tristan briefly shut his eyes as his hands began to shake. He would try to process the loss later. It was currently choking him. Right now, he chose to focus on his rage and let it consume him. “I want to see her.”

“I-I’m sorry,” the nurse stuttered. “They’ve probably already moved her down to the …um … I think only family—”

“Not her,” he spat, cutting her off. There was no way he could stand seeing the once spunky and vivacious woman he thought he may one day have a future with, lying cold on a slab. The last image he would have of her was bad enough—bloody, bruised. Not her, he repeated again, this time only in his head. Not his Riley. “I want to see Shannon Houser. She was brought in as well.”

“Are you family? Only family—”

He was about to barrel past the mousy little nurse when he felt two sets of hands restraining him. “She did this,” he said through gritted teeth. “I know she fucking did this.”

“It’s all right. We’ve got it from here,” Ryan told the nurse. Tristan saw the relief on the woman’s face before she quickly scurried away.

“Not here, Tristan,” James warned. They were drawing attention, and now a few cops who were at the scene, most of whom he knew, began to slowly inch toward him. “We’ve got him,” James told them.

“It was Shannon who instigated the crash. You think it’s a fucking coincidence she was two cars behind Riley? Let go of me!” Shannon was barely even injured.

“No, I don’t think it was a coincidence,” James replied. He and Ryan both released their hold on him, but they stayed close by.
